Vusi Mahlasela - When You Come Back

Not sure if people across the pond have heard this. The ITV is playing this tune after every world cup game. It's such a beautiful song, also one of Mandela's favourite.

Whoever thinks "Don't worry. What England can't, Argentina will. "

IN YOUR DREAMS! GERMANY IS GOING TO KICK ARGENTINA'S  A......S!

Argentina 3:1 Mexico

There was never any doubt that Argentina will make it through. I do feel a bit sorry for the Mexicans for the goal on offside, as well as Lampard's denied goal earlier today. We really do need to introduce some simple technology into this game.

Looking ahead it's good ol' enemy Germany. C'mon Argentina, it's revenge time!

Germany 4:1 England

An English a debacle at the Battle of Bloemfontein, the England players were completely overwhelmed by the Germans. Don't worry. What England can't, Argentina will.

Ghana 2:1 USA

Go GHANA!!! All of Africa is behind you. Go go go!!

The USA fought valiantly and always kept Ghana on their toes through the final seconds of the overtime. It was a long game, but worth every minute of it. I am glad it didn't drag into the penalties. Because the heart-breaking penalty shootout is coming up tomorrow. Yes, it's the England vs. Germany match. Stay tuned.

Round of 16 Starts, June 26, 2010 Schedule. Good luck for both USA and Ghana.

Uruguay 2 : 1 South Korea

If USA or Ghana passes to the quarter-final games, Uruguay will be waiting for them. It will be tough to beat this team with a very effective defense.

Uruguay 2:1 South Korea

The Taeguk warriors fought a worthy battle, but they had fallen after Luis Suárez's two magnificent goals. Don't forget that Uruguay won the World Cup twice in its early days.

Coming up is Ghana v.s. USA. Let's go Ghana! Let's go USA!

World cup ladies and the fan photos.

Chile 1 : 2 Spain, Honduras 0 : 0 Switzerland

So another South American nation made it to the knockout round. Switzerland almost made it but didn't deliver at the end.

Ivory Coast 3 : 0 North Korea, Brazil 0 ; 0 Portugal

I believe The Elephants are the best African team to qualify for this world cup. However, they were not the luckiest. Whatever the outcome is though, they showed us a beautiful performance and they deserve all the cheers and appreciation from all African fans.

BTW I am disappointed with Brazil's performance today. Their game was boring...........

Japan 3 : 1 Denmark, Cameroon 1 : Netherlands

It has been a really an interesting and breathtaking world cup so far. Who taught small countries such as Slovakia had a chance. Well I never did. The knockout round I believe it's going to be even more thrilling. I hope you guys and girls are tuned in, because this is not that one tournament you would never want to miss.

Italy 0 : 1 Slovakia, Paraguay 0 : 0 New Zealand

THE DEFENDING CHAMPIONS HAVE LOST. This is one incredible cup.

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

My answers to the previous questions: Have your say

1. How will the African teams do? Can one of them reach the quarterfinals? African teams did bad but Ghana came to the rescue.
2. Is England overrated? Not only overrated, I think they don't even deserve to pass to the second round..
3. How can Spain not win? By loosing to Switzerland.
4. Over the past two decades, every other World Cup has been Brazil's. Will it do it again? Most likely, we just saw them playing with the Elephants and they were fantastic.
5. No one is talking about the defending champions. But we shouldn't write off the Italians, right? Right! as much as I like to.
6. Is the Group of Death overhyped? NO, it's still a group of death, but group D prove to be even deadlier.
7. Which intangibles -- weather, time difference, crowds and culture -- will have the greatest impact? Vuvuzelas and incompetent referees.
8. Will Maradona help or hinder Argentina? Remain to be seen. So far things are looking well.
9. If you had to pick one team to watch, which would it be and why? USA, very creative team, and they just don't give up. That's my type of team.
10. Who wins? Brazil or Netherlands. We will see now everybody has a chance.

Germany 1:0 Ghana, Australia 2:1 Serbia

...and Ghana is through! I am so happy that finally one of the African teams has made it to the next round, when they have bravely fallen one by one. In fact Ghana has a good chance to be the first African country to advance to the semi-final if they can beat USA and the better of either Uruguay or South Korea. Compare that to England, which now has to face Germany AND Argentina before even reaching the top 4.

What an exciting day of matches that captivated us from before the kick-off to the last whistle. The results could have gone any number of ways, but in my opinion this is the best possible outcome.

The British are the biggest slackers

No one in England was working this afternoon. It's a national celebration!

USA 1 : 0 Algeria, England 1: : 0 Slovania

Here is USA a good example of a hardworking team. They wasted loads of chances, however they just kept trying and creating chances and as always HARD WORK PAYS OFF. Go USA,  Now I am a really proud US team fun.

About England win, I am just as sad as Slovenia is. They don't deserve it, period.

Tomorrow, June 23, 2010 Schedule: Go USA!!!!!!!

Nigeria 1 : 2 South Korea

I am very happy for South Korea, they deserve to go to the round of 16. Nigeria on the other hand, have brought shame on all African people.  Shame on you Yakubu for missing an unmissable goal!

Here is what happened:
"UNBELIEVABLE MISS! It was a beautiful move by Nigeria. Uche waited for Ayila to provide the overlap down the right and then knocked it through to him. Ayila's cross was perfect, eliminating the keeper and leaving Yakubu with nothing to do but tap the ball into an empty goal from three yards out .... and somehow he skewed his shot wide! It's a Chris Iwelumo special!" --- The Guardian

Argentina 2:0 Greece

It's the ultimate showdown of beautiful football against ugly football, 10 men offense against 10 men defence. Tonight's game showed us which side must prevail. I am so happy that Palermo scored the goal that sealed the game. You haven't seen the best of Argentina, because Messi hasn't scored yet.

If Greece won Euro 2004, it's because Argentina wasn't there.

France 1:2 South Africa, Uruguay 1:0 Mexico

These have been the most dramatic games of the tournament. South Africa came so so close to qualifying when they scored 2:0 against the 10-men France and Uruguay led Mexico at half-time. But they were not able to close the goal difference at the second half. It's sad to see the host out of the game.

We are proud of you, Bafana Bafana.

Spain 2 : 0 Honduras

"Spain could not quite fill their boots to the extent Portugal had managed in the afternoon, though at least they opened their World Cup account and heeded the advice of their former coach Luis Aragonés to play more attacking football." --The Guardian.

Chile 1 : 0 Switzerland

All South Americans should be proud of their teams, they are performing beautifuly.

North Korea 0 : 7 Portugal

"Chilean referee Pablo Pozo blows the whistle and puts North Korea out of their misery. A performance of sheer brilliance that, from Portugal.",  BBC.

Brazil 3:1 Ivory Coast

What a fantastic game. The elephants weren't born to dance samba, but hey that header really made me want to shout "Drogba! Drogba!! Drogba!!!" A double handball? Fabiano is simply fabulous. Why in the world was Kaka sent off? If anything, the referee should get a red card.

Italy 1 : 1 New Zealand

Gli Azzuri forced to a draw by the Qiwi's, what an outcome. The defending champions are stunned.  Predicting anything in this world cup is a deadly business.

Slovakia 0 : 2 Paraguay

Great performance from Paraguay, they deserve this win, which set them up for the next round.

Todays Schedule: June 20, 2010 The only hope for Africa is playing today......pray

Cameroon 1 : 2 Denmark

This is what the Indomitable Lions seem not to realize: "If you waste your chances you lose big time". Cameroon is the first team to be eliminated from the tournament while Holland is the first team to advance to the knockout stage.

Ghana 1:1 Australia

Australia with 10 men still kept off the "Black Stars". It's an embarrassing result for the Ghanian side.

Saturday, June 19, 2010

Netherlands 1:0 Japan

Pretty dull game, but the Dutch did what they needed.

England Team another disgrace...............

"It's all over. England have drawn 0-0 with Algeria. No, seriously. Their performance was nothing short of a disgrace, considering the incredibly high esteem assorted players on England's team hold themselves in. Let the delusional blah-blah-blahing about how it's "only their second game" and "lots of teams win the World Cup after getting off to slow starts" begin. Thanks for your time and your emails - I have to go and record a podcast in front of a drunk and very angry mob. Last word tonight goes to Paul Bowler. "Robert Green is a lucky man," he says. "He at least won't be associated with this catastrophe." ---Barry Glendenning

England 0:0 Algeria

"You can't afford to miss a single match." -Me

OK, I take that back. There are lots of useful things you can do in 90 minutes, and watching England play football is definitely not one of them.

USA 2:2 Slovenia

What a terrific game. The Americans came back from a 0:2 setback at half-time to equalize, and almost won the game had the referee not whistled away Edu's goal.

This world cup is getting better and better. You can't afford to miss a single match. Let's see what England can do tonight.

Germany 0 : 1 Serbia

"Wow. A famous win for Serbia that blows Group D wide open - they join Germany and Ghana on three points. The Germans, who had Miroslav Klose sent off for two softish bookings - are left to rue that missed penalty... they never really looked like equalising after that." BBC

WAWAWIWA......................THIS IS GREAT, now we are set for great football matches of all time.

Germany 0:1 Serbia

This is yet another shocking result. The Germans missing a penalty? Not since 1982. This bodes well for Argentina.

Just like the McDonald's commercial say, "I'm lovin' it".

France and Nigeria the Lousiest team so far

This two teams are just a disgrace for professional football. Can't blame the French too much though, the Irish curse is on them.

June 18 Schedule: Go USA!!!!!!!!!!!

June 18- Group Stage
21st Game: Germany vs. Serbia (Group D); Time: 7:30 AM; Venue: Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Watch it on ESPN, ESPN3.com, Mobile TV and see Live Cast on ESPN.com

23rd Game: England vs. Algeria (Group C); Time: 2:30 PM; Venue: Cape Town Stadium. Watch it on ESPN, ESPN3.com, Mobile TV and see Live Cast on ESPN.com

France 0:2 Mexico

A surprise? Hardly. The French team didn't look like they wanted to be there. Now they can go home. France is by far THE worst team in World Cup 2010.

Nigeria 1 : 2 Greece

Greece scored their first goals and secured their first victory in a World Cup finals, coming from behind to beat Nigeria 2-1 in their Group B match in Bloemfontein.

Argentina 4:1 South Korea

This my happiest day of the world cup so far. Argentina has shown us once again what beautiful football is all about. The best is yet to come. It's gonna be Argentina v.s. Germany in the quarter-finals.

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

South Africa 0 : 3 Uruguay

I can't tell you how sad I am,  SA lost miserably in front of their many fans. But there is a bright side to this outcome, the silencing of the vuvuzelas.

Here is a summary of what happened and its consequences:
"The victory not only advances Uruguay to four points and to top of the table ahead of their final group game with Mexico, but gives them their first World Cup finals victory since a group stage win over South Korea at Italia 90.
In contrast, this defeat is South Africa's first in 14 matches and leaves them facing an uphill task to secure a place in the last 16."

Reply to : Who's the biggest dark horse?

1. Ivory Coast

They play well, the only thing they lack in the previous game with Portugal was finishing and that my friends is what Drogba made for.  So with the help of Drogba I think "The Elephants" can reach far, and even upset Brazil..................you will see.

Who's the biggest dark horse?

By now all 32 teams have made their appearance. The last few days have been particularly interesting, and we've just seen the biggest upset of the tournament with Switzerland beating the gilded Spain. Have your say, who's going to be the biggest dark horse?

1. Ivory Coast
2. North Korea
3. Paraguay
4. Switzerland

Spain 0 : 1 Switzerland GREATEST UPSET

Wow Spain lost. This has to be one of the greatest upset in world cup history. Just think about it; Spain supposed to be the favorites after Brazil to win the cup. If the world cup is going to be like this...........I am loving it.

Here is a Quote from guardian:
"The World Cup has its first shock and, as unexpected results go, it could be that this tournament sees nothing quite so remarkable again. Spain may be sublime on the ball but there is no use out-passing opponents without out-scoring them and they learned that the hard way here in Durban against a limited but ultimately jubilant Swiss side."
Source: The Guardian

Spain 0:1 Switzerland

This is Spanish football in its truest form: they controlled the game, flowing passes, looking for opportunity, but they just can't win. They have won every single qualifying match to get here, and then they lose their first game. They have always been favorites since time began, but the perennial underachiever lets it slip once again. Call it destiny, Spain just can't win the world cup.

Chile 1:0 Honduras

La Roja have won, viva Chile!!!

Brazil 2:1 North Korea

This is an absolute shocker. North Korea's defence was impeccable in the first half; their fast-paced counter-attack was simple and effective. Brazil just couldn't pass the ball through the tight defensive line. Brazil should really feel humiliated by the 0:0 at half-time. Oh, what has Dunga done to the samba squad.

The second half saw Brazil regain some confidence over the ball and turn the match into an offensive exercise. Maicon's goal from an impossible angle was nothing short of stunning. But the audience gave more cheers for North Korea's goal near the end of the game, which was both beautiful and well-deserved.

The Group of Death is deadlier than ever...

Côte d'Ivoire 0 : 0 Portugal

As I predicted before Les Éléphants are magnificent. They didn't score but they scared the hell out of Portugal as well as Brazil. Here they come world, they are going to crash everybody on their path.

Link for replay HERE

Ivory Coast 0:0 Portugal

This is the most exciting match so far, despite the score. So much offensives on both sides, it would be a shame to see either one off after the group stage.

I get the feeling that now they will turn North Korea into punch bags to get as much goals as possible. I hope the Chollima will be spared of losing more than 10 goals. Remember, those poor players are fighting for their lives, literally.

Slovakia 1:1 New Zealand

Japan 1:0 Cameroon

Les Lions Indomptables lost, what else can say...........

PHD comic: 'World Cup vs. PhD'

Holland 2:0 Denmark

One good thing about the Vuvuzela is that players can excuse themselves of not hearing the whistle. van Persie got away without a yellow card for taking a shot after being given the off-side whistle.

Next up is Cameroon v.s. Japan. Nippon! Nippon!!

Germany 4:0 Australia

Once again the great fire power of the German Team. The whole team works like one new German engineered machine with well oiled parts.  Probably most of you out there have a lot more to say about this game, for example:
  • This is by far the best game of WC 2010.
  • Well synchronized German team
  • No unforced errors
  • Great use of the ball and team work from the German side.
  • Easily could have been Germany tons of goal : zero Australia
  • so on.......
Australia might not be the greatest challenge yet but the German team has showed their might.

Ghana 1:0 Serbia

HEY, HEY, HEY..............................We are talking about a win for the whole AFRICA here. I am so happy. Go GHANA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Slovenia 1:0 Algeria

To tell you the truth I was rooting for a 0:0 game which was beneficial to USA. Once Slovenia scored their goal I started cheering for Algerian but they disappointed me by wasting their chances. That silly hand ball by the Algeria player for example...................

USA 1:1 England

Go USA, this was the toughest game they had and they didn't disappoint. USA team fought as true warriors. I am very proud. I believe it now, the Brits are overrated...........

Argentina 1:0 Nigeria

A beautiful game, could've been 3:2 or 4:3 had both sides grasped the opportunities though.
And...why is Diego in suit at the touchline? He should be in the field taking all these shots.

Coming up is England v.s. USA. Let's go England!

South Korea 2:0 Greece

Beautiful performance from the South Korean side. Go South Korea, they are fast and talented player, they deserve this win. But there is a tough road ahead...............

My Predictions......

It's difficult to predict the outcome of this world cup. But I believes that Netherlands team is great, Spain is fascinating and Brazil well it's the football nation we are talking about here. One thing I will do first is to start cheering for my fellow African teams such as Ivory Coast if they have no chance I will go with US then Netherlands and when my luck run out I will stick with Brazil (reliable). How does that sound? Call me uncommitted but this is how I plan to follow the beautiful game.

If you ask me about Argentina, I think that it's not going to survive that long. Meanwhile, African teams might impress the world, and European teams have significant chance  to win the cup. Ohhh... and I feel sorry for North Korea which is going to lose miserably.

What's your prediction............?

Argentina

Argentina! Argentina!! Argentina!!!
